Imse Vimse Cloth Sanitary Pads - A Review

Years ago, I began my periods with cloth pads. Or rather, folded flats! However in course of time, as I grew, so did the market and consumerism and there was an abundance of disposable pads available in the market. The ultra thin variety of various brands was too tempting, to not switch, so I switched!
Then, I had my daughter and in the 7 days at hospital she was given disposable diapers. We threw 4 diapers easily everyday and that pissed me off big time with the amount of waste that I was creating and I switched to cloth diapers. In course of time, it also struck me that I was also creating that much of exactly the same waste every month for a few days - my disposable sanitary napkins!!! Thus began my hunt for cloth sanitary napkins.
The first brand of cloth sanitary napkins that I tried was ImseVimse. Its a Swedish brand and this is a Start Kit of Sanitary Pads which has 3 pantyliners (19cm long), 6 regulars pads (25cm long) and 3 heavy pads (33cm long). The best part of the pads in the top fabric - its an awesome cotton flannel material! I was initially pretty much worried that being 100% cotton I'd feel the wetness (unlike the cloth diapers that have a fleece topping which immediately transfers the wetness to the soaker beneath). But actually, quite surprisingly I hardly felt any wetness!!! The back fabric is coated with PUL to help in leakproofing.
I didn't feel like I forgot having a period, but then that was never the case even with the ultra disposables or tampons! These weren't thin like ultra disposables. They were soft and I always felt their presence, but it wasn't uncomfortable for even a moment! I had Atyu in a  baby carrier and went for a walk on my heaviest flow day and still I didn't feel uncomfortable. Right from the panty liners to the overnight pads, its all comes with 2 buttons to provide a narrow/wide fit. Once folded they look supercute like a coin purse!!!
The brand suggests you to buy this and add on as you find fit for your requirement. However for a 3 day flow (light-heavy), this stash itself is enough! The regular pads are very good and comparable to most regular ultra disposables. On my heavy day, it worked out well for 6 hours after which it would still continued absorbing, but I began to feel the wetness in 6 hrs. Till then, the absorption was well spread throughout the pad and wasn't scrunched. There was no leakage through the back or the wings. The overnight pads are just too good and actually worked out for about 10 hrs (though after 8 hrs I felt some amount of discomfort)! I honestly did not expect this performance!!! The panty-liner though, is way too thin and provides almost no protection.  It is suitable only for those very last spotting days.
All these pads are also available as individual type packs of 3. This is the black version of regular pads pack of 3. This one doesn't come with a flannel top, but guess what, I felt drier in this than the flannel topped blue one. But in both cases that's almost negligible. If you've been using cotton topped disposables, the wetness is similar. If you've been using dry-weave topped disposables, you'll feel slightly wet in this. But the irritation & rash that the dry weave gives, this doesn't. The starter kit comes with a zippered net bag for laundry. There are hardly any visible stains after washing. Its dries completely in about 36 hrs in 0-5°C weather when I hang dry it indoor.
The very fact that its all organic cotton is very comforting and the very fact that you're doing your bit for the overwhelming garbage and landfill is satisfying and for all that you're almost not giving up the comfort that comes with disposables!!! Plus another good thing is that Imse Vimse supports Tanzania with the 'women to women' project that gives a package of baby clothing, blanket and cloth diapers to economically challenged mothers. Just 1 suggestion to the brand - only the kit comes in cloth bag, the packs of 3 are packed in polythene. They could consider a non-polythene alternative!
P.S: The products were gifted by the brand for reviewing purpose, however the opinions are of my own experience and are this post does not to advertise the products.

  4. Oh wow this is a good alternative to pads made of plastic. This is a step to reduce plastic consumption and use reusable things in our everyday lives.

  6. I haven't tried using cloth pads, and makes me wonder - what if I have a heavy flow, would it leak? Am curious about this brand, and glad you shared us your review!

  7. Wow, what an idea! That could be really helpful for those who really don't want to use disposables and to reuse/recycle/reduce!

  12. I remember trying cloth once early on in my school days and hated every second of the washing process. With my hemophobia I barely manage to change pads without passing out and washing even small stains is a nightmare. I wish they would be environment friendly disposables

  13. The feeling of wearing a pad made out of plastic is not something I like very much. Tampons aren't very comfortable either. Cloth sanitary pads are new to me. I suppose these are worth a try.
