Top 5 wardrobe basics for Indian Women

Many write a list of wardrobe essentials for women and, most of them include the LBD, White shirt and Blue Jean. However not every gal requires them! There are quite a few women that I know are super stylish and wear only Indian clothes!!! So here's a revised list of 5 wardrobe essentials of Indian clothing for every Indian woman.

1. Kanjeevaram / Sequin Saree: Saree is the essence of Indian clothing. Sarees come in a variety of lengths and tons of drapes. Every Indian gal needs atleast 1 saree in her wardrobe, or rather make it 2. There has to be 1 saree that's just grand and exquisite which is perfect to wear to a wedding or a cocktail event. It could a splendid Kanjeevaram silk saree or an intricate glittery sequin embroidered saree or a mix of both that would make you the queen of the room! If budget permits why not Sabyasachi??!!!
2. Handloom / Khadi saree: Not everywhere does a grandeur of a Kanjeevaram or Embroidery work out. Some events like meetings, formal get togethers require a subtle look. It could be a saree but a simpler one like Bengal cotton handloom saree or an Ikat Khadi saree. Best places to get such simple sarees would be best from the weavers at exhibitions, or from boutiques that handpick the best!
3. Anarkali / Kurti: Though saree is fabulous, wearing it everyday can be a bit cumbersome. There comes to the rescue with Salwar Kameez. This again has tons of options in tops like kurti, anarkali etc, bottoms like chudidhar, patiala etc. A few in various degrees of grandeur and in various colors would be a perfect wardrobe. The shorter ones are best worn with patialas and the anarkali are best worn with chudidars.
Quite a few options of kurti for women are available online! With mix & match a lot can be achieved with few pieces and some creativity. A couple a short kurtis, a couple of anarkalis should make quite a few outfits by wearing them with leggings, patiala, jeans and maxi skirts.
4. Leggings: Leggings for Indian women are what jeans are for western women. It is essential and we need a few in all basic colors - black, white, beige, red, sap green etc. The plain ones are much versatile than the velvette or lace ones. They almost replace chudidhar. They are good to wear with kurti or anarkali, or to wear within translucent maxi skirts. But always never forget, leggings are not pants! 3-5 pieces in 1 pack are available online to start with and a few more to suit  some unique colored kurtis.
5. Dupatta / Stole: 2.5 to 3 m in length and 1 or 1/2m in width, dupatta are the most versatile things to own! Every gal needs quite a few in different levels of grandeur from zardozi to tie-dyed to just plain and in various materials from nets to chiffons to heavy cottons. These can be worn as dupatta or half saree or sarong or turban or can be draped in several ways! Best way to purchase them is by collecting them bit by bit as and when you come across one that you like!

  1. Thank you so much for this revised list. I´m fed up of most indian fashion blogs as they only showcase western clothes and ignore indian wear thereby neglecting a vast number of indian women who would love to look stylish but prefer or are compelled (by profession) to wear ethnic stuff. Keep up the good work.
